A blessing never expected

A blessing never expected

It's funny how life is. No matter what happens, we expect things to go a certain way. Sure, we grudgingly acknowledge it doesn't always happen, but nonetheless do everything to try and manipulate it. I'm no different. I was suppose to be a mom much sooner than at 40 and it was suppose to be easy. For all intensive purposes, I should have five children right now, including 4-year old twins. But life didn't turn out that way. Instead of enjoying a growing belly and nine months of planning, life suddenly brought my husband and I a premature angel with heart problems, clubbed feet and Down syndrome. Instead of bringing him home from the hospital as our own child, life brought 18 months of court proceedings and endless lawyer fees. Instead of a healthy "normal" child, life brought a constant barrage of doctors appointments, therapy sessions and bureaucratic red tape. But, instead of "typical" experiences, life brings unique joys, ever-changing challenges that embolden us and new friends whom we would have never met otherwise. Instead of chasing him through the house, life brings constant pride from each step he takes with a walker. Instead of dealing with the usual two-year-old nuances, life brings endless cuddling, persistent smiles and communication that's uniquely our own. Yeah, life hasn't gone as planned...and I thank God every day for it.
