New Parents Outreach

A personal contact is made to extend support to parents with newborn or adopted children who have been given the diagnosis of Down syndrome.  A TBODS’ bag with books, DVD, and other informative materials are given at no cost to the new parents.

Buddy Walk

This is our only fundraising event each year.  We host the one-mile walk that promotes understanding and acceptance of Down syndrome.  The day includes lunch and a T-shirt to all those who register.  We accept monetary donations, pledges, sponsorships, and raffle items for this event.  All people who have Down syndrome receive a medal when finishing their walk.  The day also includes other fun things to do such as jump houses, dance competitions, music, washable tattoos, current information on Down syndrome, local mascots, and a huge raffle.  Community groups such as the University of the Pacific’s Baseball Team, Port City Roller Girls, local Girl Scout troops, Host Lyons Club, and the United Way have all volunteered and helped out on this special day.  Annually, we give 7% of our income from this event back to the National Down Syndrome Society for their research and advocacy efforts.

Informational Lending Library

We are currently in the process of purchasing children’s books, informational books, DVDs, and other pertinent information regarding Down syndrome for parents to borrow.

Monthly Support/Connection Meetings

We usually have one meeting or event each month for families to attend.  We do provide childcare led by an adult with CPR and Standard First Aid certification with assistance by local high school and college age students.  A dinner is provided at most of these meetings, along with an informational speaker or panels on topics regarding Down syndrome.  Some meetings are theme based, such as Kite Flying Day or Harvest Fest, which enables families to enjoy social fun and allows time for verbal interactions in a non-threatening manner.

Annual Winter Social & Summer Picnic

Each December, TBODS hosts a Winter Holiday Social with a wonderful dinner and pictures with Santa Claus.  We have held these at the Stockton’s Children’s Museum, John’s Incredible Pizza and local clubhouse halls.

In the summer, TBODS hosts an Annual Family Picnic at Micke Grove Park in Lodi.  This social event encourages our families to invite close relatives who are a part of their child’s life.  Hot dogs and hamburgers are provided by TBODS and families are asked to bring a potluck dish to share.  Besides eating, we visit the Micke Grove Zoo, have jump houses and some parents are willing to participate in a fun game or two.

These socials provide a wonderful opportunity for families to relax in an environment where they know that people will understand them and their loved ones without an explanation.  Each year families comment on how they truly enjoyed getting together at such joyous times.  New parents, as well as experienced parents, are able to network, share and compare resources and ideas.  Many friendships result because of these gatherings and they are among our most popular activities.
